Instagram error messages
There are many reasons why your post might fail when posting to your Instagram Professional profiles. We strive to provide error messaging to help you understand what caused the issue and how to prevent it from happening the next time you post.
For any posts that haven't made it to Instagram, check the Failed view for error messages in your dashboard by going to Publish > Failed.
Connection issues
This Instagram Account needs to be reconnected. Please follow the steps listed in our guide to confirm all permissions have been granted
- Explanation: This error message indicates that not all permissions were accepted when the Profile was added.
- Solution: View our Reconnect an Instagram account article to see instructions on how to reconnect your Instagram profile. Please ensure all profiles/pages and permissions are selected in the Edit settings view. Once this is done, try reposting your message from the Failed view.
Instagram was unable to publish your post due to an issue with your Instagram account. Please sign into the Instagram app directly to complete any actions required to enable your account.
- Explanation: This error message indicates that there is an issue with your Instagram Professional profile that needs to be addressed by logging into your Instagram account natively
- Solution: Head to Instagram.com or the Instagram app and log into the Instagram account for which this error is showing, then follow any on-screen prompts to address the issue.
Security issues
Your post has been declined by Instagram for going against their Community Standards. In an effort to prevent their Community Standards from being circumvented, they have not advised what part of the content has breached their Community Standards.
- Explanation: This error message indicates that some elements of the post (video/image or text) can't be processed because the content breaches their Community Standards.
- Solution: Please read through the community guidelines and then adjust the content in your post.
Content issues
Instagram was unable to access the attached media in the URL. Please make sure that the included media is publicly available.
- Explanation: The media you are attempting to post is not available to the API. An example of this may be a Google Drive with a password enabled.
- Solution: Please store your media in a publicly accessible location to ensure that it is accessible to the platform when posting.
Instagram's API does not support posting a Story to a Creator account. Please send this as a post, or convert your account to a Business account and try again.
- Explanation: You are attempting to post an Instagram Story to an Instagram Creator account, which is not allowed via the Instagram API
- Solution: Convert your Instagram account to a Business account via the Instagram App and then try the post again.
Instagram allows a maximum of 2200 characters, 30 hashtags, and 20 @ tags in one caption. Please update your caption and try again.
- Explanation: The text in your message has exceeded the character, hashtag or profile tag limit.
- Solution: Please shorten the caption and adjust any tags/hashtags as necessary.
You have not provided any media to post. Please attach some media and try again.
- Explanation: The post did not include media, and Instagram requires that a media file be attached.
- Solution: Please add media and try to repost. If you feel you attached a media file to your post, please submit a ticket with the attached media in question, and we will investigate further.
The following user(s) cannot be accessed:
- Explanation: The account you are attempting to tag in your Instagram post either does not exist, or is a private Instagram account.
- Solution: Fix any mistakes with the account tag, or reschedule after the listed Instagram account has been updated to public.
Instagram was unable to process the attached media. Please try again.
- Explanation: The image or video does not meet Instagram’s requirements when posting from an API.
- Solution: The failed requirement will appear on the media in the Compose Box. Please adjust the media and reschedule the post.
The image you attached exceeds the maximum height requirements for Instagram.
- Explanation: The image does not meet Instagram’s requirements when posting from a third-party platform.
- Solution: The failed requirement will appear on the media in the Compose Box. Please adjust the media and reschedule the post.
Instagram was unable to publish the image attached in your post
- Explanation: The image does not meet Instagram’s requirements when posting from a third-party platform.
- Solution: The failed requirement will appear on the media in the Compose Box. Please adjust the media and reschedule the post.
Connection issues at Instagram
Due to a temporary connection issue at Instagram, we were unable to automatically publish your post. Please try again later.
- Explanation: This error message is usually displayed when Instagram experiences downtime while posting.
- Solution: Wait for 5 to 10 minutes before you try reposting the message from the Failed view. If it fails with the same error message, please check downdetector.com for any Instagram outages.
