X (Twitter) publishing rules
As part of efforts to stop spam violations on its platform, X (Twitter) has implemented restrictions to their API to limit users' ability to perform coordinated actions across multiple accounts.
These changes took effect on 23 March 2018. All posts scheduled to publish to more than one account simultaneously will be blocked from being created or sent, or will be undelivered.
Three main rules
From Twitter’s original update, these are the three main rules they’re enforcing:
- Do not (and do not allow your users to) simultaneously post identical or substantially similar content to multiple accounts.
For example, your service should not permit a user to select several accounts they control from which to publish a given Tweet.
- This applies regardless of whether the Tweets are published to Twitter at the same time, or are scheduled/queued for future publication.
- As an alternative to posting identical content, you can Retweet content from one account from the other accounts you wish to share that post from.
- Do not (and do not allow your users to) simultaneously perform actions such as Likes, Retweets, or follows from multiple accounts.
For example, your service should not permit a user to select several accounts they control to follow a specified account.- The use of any form of automation (including scheduling) to post identical or substantially similar content, or to perform actions such as Likes or Retweets, across many accounts that have authorized your app (whether or not you created or directly control those accounts) is not permitted.
For example, applications that coordinate activity across multiple accounts to simultaneously post Tweets with a specific hashtag (e.g. in an attempt to cause that topic to trend) are prohibited.
What that means
The bottom line is that you cannot simultaneously publish a post to two X (Twitter) profiles, nor can you publish the same post to any one profile back to back. It does not matter if the posts are created in the Compose Box, uploaded through the Bulk Scheduler, sent from a Content Library, or published from an RSS feed autposter.
You also won't be able to publish posts with 'similar content'. What is 'similar content'?
if you post duplicative or substantially similar content, replies, or mentions over multiple accounts or multiple duplicate updates on one account, or create duplicate or substantially similar accounts.
When asked to define what they mean by this, and this was their response:
We are unable to comment on enforcement specifics. But, to avoid enforcement actions, we strongly urge you not to post content you believe might run afoul of the policy.
From this, it is assumed that any messages that include the same or similar wording, the same image, and the same link will likely be considered in breach of these rules regarding publishing the same post to multiple accounts.
Publishing to X (Twitter) at the same time
It's fine to send unique messages to multiple Twitter accounts, even if they are sent out at the same date and time. These rules specifically relate to messages with the same or similar content being sent to multiple accounts simultaneously.
