Set up geotargeting for a Facebook Page
Geotargeting settings for Facebook Page profiles allow your posts to be visible only to users from a specific, limited area, allowing for more targeted messaging. You can adjust these settings anytime to change the audience for subsequent posts. If you haven't already, please view our guide, Add a Facebook Page, which covers setting up a Facebook Page profile.
How to set or update geotargeting settings
- When setting up or editing a Facebook Page profile, under the 'Geotargeting' option, click on the Edit link.
- From the 'Countries' list, select the country you want to target.
- In the 'Regions' field, choose the specific region you want to target and click the Add button so that this is added to the 'Selected Criteria' box.
Alternatively, if you want to target the entire country, select the appropriate 'Country (all regions)' option. If you’re looking to post to more than one area, be sure to click the Add button for each one.
Important: This is required even if you only want to post to specific regions in that country. - You can also choose for your posts to only be visible to users based on the language selected on their profile. In the 'Languages' field, highlight the appropriate language and use the Add button to add the language to the 'Selected Criteria' box.
Note: Facebook allows for geotargeting to be set in the following ways:
- Multiple countries only
- One country with multiple regions only (no specific cities)
- One country with one region and multiple cities.
- To remove criteria from your geotargeting filter, click on the one you want to delete in the 'Selected Criteria' box and click the Remove button.
- Once you’re happy with the geotargeting settings for that profile, click the OK button at the bottom, then Save/Update your Facebook Page profile settings.
Caution: If a viewer is not recognied by Meta as being in the targeted area, they will not be able to see posts sent to that Facebook Page. Meta is not perfect in recognising locations (and often guesses at it), so it is possible that a person is in the target location but still can't see the posts. Keep this in mind when making targeting choices to ensure more people can view your posts, including those who might be travelling or not recognised as being in the location.
