What can I try when I'm having trouble with Twitter automation?
This troubleshooting guide will prove useful if you:
- Send posts to more than one Twitter account at the same time.
- Use profile lists in conjunction with other profiles/profile lists.
- Have an automation app set up (Twitter Auto-Reply or Twitter Auto-Retweet).
- Use RSS Auto-Post or Queues to share content to multiple Twitter profiles.
- Are currently receiving bounced messages for your Twitter profiles.
We have also created a detailed FAQ in relation to bulk posting to Twitter and the other aspects of Sendible affected by Twitter's update.
Quick troubleshooting guide
Compose Box
Posts can be scheduled to one Twitter account at a time. Identical or similar tweets should not be duplicated across accounts. We recommend using our new feature called Smart Posts to streamline how you customize the copy for your social media posts.
Profile Lists
Profile lists are used to group a number of social media profiles into one, usually used by digital agencies to curate content for specific accounts. Since you can schedule the same message to only one Twitter account, you will be able to add only one Twitter account to a profile list.
What will cause your messages to bounce?
Your post will not be sent if you have more than one Twitter account in a profile list OR are attempting to schedule a message to more than one profile list with one or more Twitter profiles in each. The tweet will be scheduled to the first Twitter account in your list and the rest will bounce.
How to fix this?
This is how you can check if you have Twitter profiles set up in profile lists:
- Navigate to the Profile Lists section of your dashboard.
- Select any of your existing profile lists.
- Enter “Twitter” in the filter section to quickly identify which lists have more than one account in them.
- Remove the extra Twitter account/s.
- Rinse and repeat for other profile lists if required.
Queues
We advise that you top these up frequently. Identical and similar tweets will not be accepted by Twitter and will bounce.
What will cause your messages to bounce?
Repeating queues or selecting “Recycle messages” in your queue settings can cause the messages to bounce so we recommend spreading out your Tweets to repeat in periods of more than 24 hours.
How to fix this?
There are two ways you can check your queued messages:
Navigate to your Calendar in your dashboard and select the Queued view and see if any Twitter posts have been scheduled to more than one account.
You can use channel filters to see scheduled posts exclusively from Twitter as you see in the below on the right. While in the Calendar, select the Overview view and add the Twitter accounts you’d like to check to speed up your process.
Retweeting
Sharing is encouraged by Twitter as long as it's meaningful. We recommend retweeting tweets natively by other Twitter accounts you manage. You can do this directly from the Engage view (Priority Inbox) or one of your social feeds.
What will cause your messages to bounce?
While sharing is encouraged, duplicating messages or aggressively retweeting can be picked up by Twitter and your messages may bounce. Make sure that you keep retweets relevant and steer clear from the option to “retweet as your own” as posting the same content as the original author to even one account can be viewed as duplication of content.
How to use this?
Only share content when it’s relevant to your followers and you know that it will bring value. This feature makes it easier to create more engagement for your content but you must make sure not to abuse it.
Repeated Messages (recycling content)
This feature is restricted and will not let you publish the same post to more than one Twitter account. If you have Repeated Messages set up, please check that these are not currently being sent to more than one account.
Twitter strongly advises against sharing duplicate or similar posts to multiple accounts as well as the same account. While it used to be best practice to keep sharing the same link over and over, social media managers need to get more creative with Twitter posts and make the most of this change.
How to fix this?
There is no special view to see all of your posts that you are currently repeating, but these can be quickly identified by an additional line of text below the content of the post and a refresh icon both, in the scheduled view and in the compose box when clicking edit.
RSS Auto-Post
You will be able to automatically share tweets from the same blog or website but only to one Twitter account.
What will cause your messages to bounce?
If you currently have this automation set up, make sure to check the settings and see if you are not scheduling the same RSS Feed links to more than one Twitter account or too frequently.
How to fix this?
- Each RSS Auto-post feed can only have one Twitter account connected to it.
- Don’t share too often - sharing a few useful articles with your audience every week has proved effective for most of our social media managers.
- Alternatively, you can set all of your messages to be Published as Draftinstead of being scheduled or queued. This way, you can pick and choose which messages you’d like to share on which Twitter account if one publication has relevant content for more than one client.
Automation apps
Auto Reply and Twitter Auto Retweet apps will no longer be available. Any Twitter automations set up previously will be removed automatically.
What will change?
These Twitter automation apps will no longer be available on our social media management tool. If you had one set up, it will be automatically removed. The social posts sent via the automation apps will still display in Sent view so your work won’t be lost.
Merge tags
Using merge tags in the Compose Box does not provide enough customization for Twitter to not classify posts as too similar. Tweets using merge tags will bounce if scheduled to more than one Twitter profile.
How to fix this?
- Navigate to the Scheduled view.
- Remove Filter by user.
- >Add “$custom” in the search field.
- Filter by channels select Twitter channels.
- Edit posts to ensure that the content is different.
- You can still keep the merge tags for reporting.
- Rinse and repeat for other posts.
If you have used merged tags within your queues, you will need to use the search field for each queue that has been created.
Is there a solution coming?
We are currently working on a new feature called Content Snippets to make this easier and will share more information in due course. This will be handy for social media managers working with franchises or businesses with multiple locations and accounts.
Other useful things to know
Our social media management tool will be in compliance on Tuesday, March 20th which is 3 days earlier than what Twitter outlined in their blog about their policy about automation and use of multiple accounts
Why is Twitter doing this now?
After their careful review of the 2016 U.S. Election, Twitter uncovered that a substantial amount of people were connected to a propaganda effort by a Russian government-linked organization known as the Internet Research Agency. To eliminate future malicious activity targeting the crucial conversations taking place on Twitter, Twitter has decided to make changes to TweetDeck and Twitter API. It has been considered best practice to reshare the same links and images to keep up with the short lifespan of each tweet but this technique will soon be obsolete and frowned upon by Twitter. Our team has published a useful blog on Sendible Insights with the best practices of using Twitter after this change.
